Olympic surfer Katherine Diaz killed by lightning

Katherine Diaz, El Salvador’s prime surfer, who had been getting ready for the game’s Olympic debut this summer time, has died after being struck by lightning.

“A terrific athlete who has represented our nation has left us,” the Salvadoran Surf Federation stated in a publish paying tribute to Katherine Diaz on social media. “See you quickly, nice warrior. El Salvador is in mourning.”

The 22 year-old had entered the water to begin a coaching session on Friday close to her house in El Tunco when she was struck. She was getting ready for a event which might have earned her a Tokyo Olympics spot.
